Exercises to Help You Maintain Your Balance as You Age

 Julia Noreika, PT, DPT

As we age, many of us experience problems with balance

Balance problems are one reason older people fall, and falls are the leading cause of injury for people over 65 years old.

But there are ways we can work to maintain our balance, says Parminder Padgett, PT, DPT, a neurological clinical specialist and physical therapy clinical supervisor on the physical medicine and rehabilitation team at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

One way is through balance exercises. Padgett teamed up with her colleague, Physical Therapist Julia Noreika, PT, DPT to illustrate them.

Before you begin, realize these exercises are generally suitable for most adults. But if you have a sedentary lifestyle or any underlying health conditions, you should consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new workout routine. Be safe and consider having a spotter present during your first few sessions. Also, keep your exercise space clear of any potential hazards, including pets or clutter that could cause you to lose your balance.
